Ceramic coating for yachts and boats

A boat kept in salt water is under constant attack from three directions at once. Salt crystallises on the topsides and etches the surface every time it dries. UV breaks down the resin in the gelcoat until the colour goes flat and chalky. And the waterline collects a band of staining that no amount of ordinary washing removes.

A ceramic coating does not stop any of that from happening. What it does is put a hard, chemically bonded layer between those forces and the surface underneath, so the damage lands on something replaceable instead of on your gelcoat.

What actually changes after coating

The difference owners notice first is not the gloss. It is the wash-down. A coated hull sheds salt and grime under a hose in a fraction of the time, because there is nothing for dirt to key into. Crews who used to spend a morning on the topsides after every trip get that morning back.

The difference that matters financially shows up years later. Gelcoat that has been sealed from day one does not chalk, and a boat that has held its finish sells for noticeably more than an identical one that has not. On a vessel worth several hundred thousand euros, that gap is larger than the cost of the coating several times over.

What a coating cannot do. It is not armour. It will not stop impact damage, fender rash or dock scrapes, and no coating removes the need to haul out and inspect. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

Each of these takes a different product from the Ceramic Pro range. A single coating applied over everything is a shortcut, and it fails first on the surfaces it was never designed for.

How the work runs

1. Survey

We look at the boat, measure the current gloss level and the depth of oxidation, and write down a scope. This visit is also where we tell you honestly if the boat does not need the full system.

2. Correction

Wash, chemical decontamination, then machine polishing in as many stages as the surface needs. This is most of the labour and most of the cost. A coating locks in whatever is beneath it — every swirl, every dull patch — so nothing is applied until the surface is right.

3. Application

Layers go on by hand, surface by surface, by a certified applicator working within the temperature and humidity window the product requires. This is why the work happens in a shed or under cover rather than on an open hardstanding in August.

4. Cure and registration

The boat stays dry while the coating hardens, then the warranty is registered against the hull with Ceramic Pro and an inspection date is set for next season.

What determines the price

Length is the number people expect to matter. It matters least. What drives a quote is the condition of the surface and how many correction stages it needs to reach a state worth sealing.

A three-year-old, well-kept hull can need a single polishing stage. A ten-year-old hull that has spent every summer in the sun without protection can need three, plus wet sanding in places. Same length, very different job.

The other factors are how many surfaces you include, how many layers the system calls for, and whether the boat can be hauled out or has to be worked afloat.

We quote after seeing the boat, not over the phone. A number given without a survey is either padded to cover the worst case or will be revised upward once work starts.

When to book

Coating work belongs to the refit season. From October to March boats are out of the water, yards have space, and there is time for correction and cure without a charter booking waiting. Topsides, glass, canvas and interiors can be done afloat at your berth in the shoulder months; anything below the waterline needs a lift.

The practical consequence: winter slots fill during late summer, while owners and captains are still aboard. If you are reading this in season, that is the moment to start the conversation rather than the moment to wait.

Where we work

Our base is Tivat, alongside Porto Montenegro and the refit yards in Boka Bay, with mobile teams covering Kotor, Budva, Bar and Herceg Novi. Across the border we work through the Croatian coast — Dubrovnik, Split, Trogir and Šibenik — scheduling around existing haul-outs so a lift is not paid for twice.

Evidence

What is actually documented

Coating marketing is full of claims nobody can check. These two are independently issued and verifiable, so we quote them exactly — including their limits.

Bureau Veritas type approval

Certificate 48947/B0 BV · valid to 18 Mar 2027

Ceramic Pro Marine holds a Type Approval Certificate from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore as an anti-fouling system, assessed against the appendix to IMO MEPC.195(61). The coating is organotin-free.

What that means precisely: it certifies the product complies with the international convention on anti-fouling systems. Bureau Veritas states the approval does not cover anti-fouling performance, durability or corrosion protection. It proves the product is legitimate for use on vessels — not how well it works.

Towing tank resistance tests

Two independent series measured hull resistance with and without the coating in a university towing tank.

2.97%less resistance — 8.11 m bulk carrier model, 2018

Both figures are model-scale. The 2018 report states plainly that the result is valid for the model, not for a full-size ship. We quote them as evidence the coating measurably smooths the hull, not as a fuel-saving promise for your boat.
